This was utter madness. Nathan knew that, knew he was committing an unpardonable sin against his betrothed, against his clan…and yet, he didn’t care. After kissing Hannah once again, feeling her in his arms, her lithe body pressed up against him, he knew he could be with no one else. He would make his amends to Jennie somehow, but he would not be deterred from having Hannah McAllister as his wife.

Luckily, everyone had retired to their rooms for the evening by the time Nathan returned from his encounter with Hannah, and so no one had the opportunity to ask him where he had been and what he had been doing. No doubt Jeremiah knew the precise moment when his younger brother stepped across the threshold, but he did not emerge from the room he shared with his wife Lisbeth. If he wondered at all, Jeremiah probably thought Nathan had simply stepped out for a drink at the bar around the corner. Each of the brothers had done so more than once, so it made a good excuse.

In the morning, the flat was a-bustle, for now that Jeremiah had settled on the date of their departure, there was much to be done. Packing was already commencing, of the items that wouldn’t be immediately needed over the next few days. And Jeremiah asked Nathan to go to the rail yard, so he might inspect the accommodations on the westward-bound train, and determine whether the extra expense of a first-class compartment was worth it.

Of course Nathan agreed to this fact-finding mission, as it would get him safely away without having to offer any explanations for an extended absence. He would take care of that errand first, and then go to City Hall afterward to procure the marriage license. After that, he would meet Hannah, and return with her to have the ceremony performed. And then…

…and then she would be his wife.

A rush of heat went through him at that thought. Her kisses were sweet, and he could only imagine what it would be like to have all of her. Surely that same passion must carry over to her marriage bed.

Trying to be a dutiful brother, he visited the rail yard, where a slightly puzzled conductor allowed him to peek inside one of the empty trains. Nathan took notes, but it was clear enough to him that the family would be terribly cramped unless they bought passage in one of the first-class cars. Because they would be spending two days on the train, the extra expense would be worth it.

And we will be one more, he thought as he thanked the conductor and headed out toward the street, so we will have need of all the space we can procure.

No, that wasn’t right. He couldn’t imagine that Jennie would remain with them and still head west. Once she learned of his betrayal, she would demand to be sent home to her family in Connecticut. At least, that was what Nathan knew he would do if he were in similar circumstances.
